Why Is epii Controversial?

epii rose to popularity almost overnight, but the brand has not been without controversy. One of the things that sparked criticism online is the use of the K-beauty label on its products, even though the brand does not have a sales presence in South Korea. The products themselves are manufactured in Korea, and epii belongs to a company that has a Korean subsidiary. It’s also worth remembering that many popular Korean brands have greater recognition abroad or are sold in foreign markets before becoming available in the Korean market.

Another issue that has drawn criticism is the brand’s aggressive advertising, particularly its marketing approach toward competing products. There have also been reports of seemingly independent social media accounts recommending the brand in a very aggressive way under various posts, including posts that may not be directly related to epii. Even James Welsh made a video discussing the brand.

That said, these controversies don’t necessarily mean that epii’s products are bad or that you won’t enjoy using them. Marketing practices and product quality are two separate things. As with any skincare brand, it’s worth looking beyond the hype, checking the ingredients and claims, and, whenever possible, trying the products for yourself to see whether they actually work for your skin.

Why Does Your Moisturizer Matter More After 30?

Moisturizer is an essential part of every skincare routine, whether your skin is  dry or oily and whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s or above. epii Double Up Cream Ectoin & Panthenol

Ectoin is a protective, moisture-retaining ingredient that has become increasingly popular in premium barrier-care skincare. It helps defend the skin against environmental stress while soothing irritation and supporting long-lasting hydration.  It’s no surprise that epii chose it as one of the key ingredients in this cream, pairing it with panthenol, another well-known soothing humectant.

The texture may remind you of toothpaste because the bottle contains two separate formulas – one enriched with panthenol and the other with ectoin. It’s a concept similar to the one used by innisfree in its Volcanic Swirl Pore Mask, and brands like epii seem to be following this trend. With this type of packaging, it’s important to squeeze the tube from the center to dispense both formulas in the correct ratio.

Both formulas also contain niacinamide, a skincare staple known for its wide range of benefits, including supporting the skin barrier, improving uneven skin tone, and helping regulate sebum production. Another barrier-supporting ingredient in the formula is squalane, which helps keep the skin soft and reduces moisture loss.

Its key ingredient is Hydroxypropyl Tetrahydropyrantriol, which is believed to stimulate the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), helping the skin retain moisture and improving firmness and elasticity. It also contains MATRIXYL™ synthe’6 (listed as Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38), a peptide that supports the production of several key components of the skin matrix, including collagen. Together, these ingredients make a promising combination for addressing wrinkles and improving skin elasticity.

epii HPT6 Ultra Cream 10% is also packed with antioxidants, including ectoin and carnosine, but the brand hasn’t neglected barrier support. The formula contains cholesterol, squalane, and ceramides, which help replenish the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss. Because it combines barrier-supporting lipids with HPT and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38, this is the more advanced well-aging formula of the two, particularly for mature skin concerned with wrinkles, elasticity, and declining firmness.

The texture appears to be richer than the brand’s other moisturizers. If your skin is sensitive to niacinamide, there’s good news – HPT6 Ultra Cream 10% is free from niacinamide, fragrance, and essential oils. It’s a more sophisticated formula, which is reflected in its higher price. However, if you’re looking for a moisturizer that addresses both a weakened skin barrier and visible signs of aging, epii HPT6 Ultra Cream 10% is likely the better choice.

Neither formula is universally better; the right choice depends on your main concern.
