PHA (Polyhydroxy Acid)
PHAs exfoliate the skin by removing dead skin cells, unclogging pores, and promoting cell turnover, resulting in smoother skin without causing irritation or sensitivity. PHAs have humectant properties that help to attract and retain moisture in the skin, improving hydration levels. PHAs stimulate collagen production, which helps to improve skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and promote a more youthful complexion. Some PHAs, like gluconolactone, have antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals, environmental pollutants, and UV radiation, reducing signs of premature aging. PHAs strengthen the skin’s natural barrier function, protecting it from external aggressors and preventing moisture loss, making them suitable for sensitive or compromised skin.
Ingredients that pair well with PHA:
- Hydration: Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid
- Barrier Repair: Ceramides
- Skin Calming / Anti-Inflammatory: Panthenol, Allantoin
- Anti-Aging: Niacinamide
- Skin Repair: Beta-Glucan
Not-Ideal Pairings:
Stacking other strong exfoliating agents such as BHA
๐ก Why: PHA is gentle, yet cumulative exfoliation which still may stress the barrier.
